JOB OVERVIEW 

 

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a professional to join our team in the role of Millwright / Machinist at our Maintenance/Repair Machine Shop located at the Sir Adam Beck Generating Station in Niagara Falls, ON

Reporting to the Manager, Work Centre / Maintenance, the Millwright / Machinist maintains, installs and troubleshoots mechanical equipment and systems, covering all areas of millwrighting, rigging and testing with an emphasis on performing machining.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES 

 

  • Utilize Boring Mill, Mill, Lathe, Vertical Lathe, Radial Arm Drill, Surface Grinder, Line Boring Machine and CNC Mill and Lathes to: fabricate and manufacture parts and equipment such as; pins, bushings, shafts, wheels, guide and thrust bearings
  • Install, commission, inspect, troubleshoot, service, maintain and overhaul all mechanical equipment and components associated with generating stations and facilities.  Take preventative or corrective action.
  • Maintain and operate precision machines, test equipment and shop tools to carry out work assignments, including the fabrication of components and the use of specialized tooling.
  • Co-ordinate large projects related to the installation of new systems or the replacement of existing systems with different technologies. Carry out contract coordination and inspections to ensure effective quality assurance.
  • Align machines using precision equipment such as dial indicators and laser-alignment tools.
  • Provide technical support, advice, coordination and assistance with regard to emerging work, projects and daily routines, including the development of technical/operational solutions to problems.
  • Prepare and or modify written reports, repair procedures and technical specifications.
  • Prepare mechanical and civil design sketches, drawings, and bills of material.
  • Conducts preventive maintenance and overhauls of hydroelectric generators; adjusts and/or inspects hydroelectric generators, turbines, hydraulic governors or associated auxiliary equipment including performing alignments, insitu machining, etc. 
  • Repairs to malfunctioning tools and equipment. 
  • Inspects work performed by outside contractors to ensure product specifications and quality. 
  • Perform other related duties of a comparable level as assigned.
  • Accountable for the health, safety and well being of self and others, as per established technical/ operating procedures and standards, and includes the development of technical/operating solutions to problems.

 

EDUCATION

 

Grade 12 or equivalent.

Minimum 8,000 hours of Millwright apprenticeship.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Completion of Millwright apprentice program or Millwright Red Seal qualified and 2 years experience as a journeyperson.
  • Completion of a Machinist apprenticeship or a minimum of 2 years experience as a Machinist.
  • Advanced knowledge in Machining skills – precision machining using lathes, radial drill presses, mills, grinders, etc.
  • Computer Numerical Control (CNC) experience would be an asset.
  • Experience in using and maintaining precision measuring equipment such as; outside/inside Micrometers, Vernier Calipers, Test Indicators, Height Gauges, etc.
  • Knowledge and experience in maintaining, repairing and machining large components including hydroelectric generating equipment.
  • Knowledge and experience in ordering and calculating raw materials requirements.
  • Experience in rigging and operating overhead cranes for transporting equipment and materials.
  • Ability to interpret and read drawings, blueprints and schematics.
  • Experience in preventative and corrective maintenance
  • Ability to work well with others in a team environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

 

 

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Required to lift materials in excess of 50 pounds.
  • Required to work in confined areas.
  • Required to work at heights.
  • Require to work around high voltage equipment.
