Position Overview

Reporting to the appropriate site supervisor, the Boilermaker will be responsible for providing full cycle, in depth knowledge and support to ensure Aecon Industrial West achieves their general and specific project objectives. This position will be located North East of Edmonton in the Region of Wood Buffalo (Fort McMurray, Alberta). The client provides transportation to and from the camp accommodations which they supply. The successful candidate will be required to join Boilermaker Local Union 146.

 Key Responsibilities

  • Read blueprints and specifications to lay out the work
  • Perform maintenance work on boilers, tanks and pressure vessels, and perform all types of structural and plate work on dust, air, gas, steam, oil, water and other liquid-tight containers. Often working on scaffolds, inside vessels, and on permanent platforms located at heights.
  • Use of hand tools, power tools and shop equipment; including grinders, post drill, radial drill, angle rolls, plate rolls, punches, shears, brakes and presses.
  • Competent in setting up and assembling of rigging equipment; including wire rope, block and tackle, gin poles, cranes, derricks, hoisting and jacking equipment.
  • Some additional activities, a boilermaker, lay out plate, sheet steel or other heavy metal, and locate and mark bending and cutting lines, use of oxy-fuel torch, and chip and grind parts to shape for fitting together. Then fit and tack weld parts together using electric arc welding equipment.
  • Build, maintain and repair of, stacks and stack liners, storage tanks, penstocks, furnaces, dust, air, steam or liquid tight containers, and any attached platforms, ladders, walkways, floors, roofs, support structures.
  • Comply with safety regulations

  • Operate two-way radios and other communication equipment


Required Knowledge & Skills


  • Must have two to three years’ experience in the oil & gas industry
  • Must have two to three years’ experience as a Boilermaker
  • Must complete Construction Safety Training System (CSTS) course prior to employment
  • Must have completed Oil Sands Safety Association (OSSA) course prior to employment
  • Must complete Basic Safety Orientation (BSO) course prior to employment
  • Completion of Aecon online Orientation (Aecon will provide this)
  • Drivers Abstract must be provided prior to employment
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License
  • Drug and Alcohol testing, including Random Testing on sites in the Ft. McMurray Region of wood Buffalo
  • Must have experience rigging and/or a valid rigging certification
  • Must have Industrial Maintenance and/or turnaround experience
  • Must be a part of or join Boilermaker Local Union 146.
  • Must travel to job site on bus (Transportation provided)
  • Must be comfortable working in congested areas with other heavy equipment
  • Must be able to communicate effectively over the two-way radio
  • Must speak, read and write in English
  • Must be able to fill out written daily paperwork
  • Must be a dedicated individual
  • Must comply with site specific rules and regulations
  • Must be safety oriented boilermaker

Compensation & Benefits Overview

$31.44 - $42.91 per hour

Shift work – 10-12 hours per day, 6 days on 1 day off, or 12 days on 2 days off (hours and shift schedule subject to change)
